Can I save music on a hard drive of Xbox 360 via USB storage devices or portable MP3 players;

To save the music is not (only play, but saving) to a hard drive of Xbox 360, can I do with a USB storage device or a portable MP3 player; Or is it that you can only copy music from CD “Can you describe the process?
