How can I write to a USB mass storage USB;

I have a 30GB hard drive in a case that is configured as a USB mass storage USB. The computer recognizes, but I can not write about it. I think we should give a number of unit (letter), but I have no idea how to do that. I am using Windows Vista Home Plus.
