My DVR has died twice. Failed hard drive both times in a 10 month period. They waived the $40 fee when I persisted. Backup will be nice for the next time it fails.

They make 256 gb flash drives lol. Also, good flash drives can reach up to 4 mb/s, sufficient, but not even remotely good. Oddly enough though, flash drives seem to not allow large files to be stored on them…..even if the file is well under its maximum capacity…

Because they don’t have fast enough read/write speeds, plus the HDD has to be 50GB minimum.

Well we have dish and a USB device and we are unable to save DVR events to that drive. What is going on?

In response to what use this may be….. Lets say you upgrade your box or your hard drive on your DVR goes out. Guess what all your recordings are gone. Dish techs do not transfer your recordings to your new box. However if you have a external hard drive you never have worry about losing anything

As long as you manage your saved shows and don’t use up all the storage on the box what possible use would this be? I am all for new technology but this just mostly seems like something for the user who needs to save a huge amount of shows.

YOU CANNOT TRANSFER YOUR SHOWS FROM THE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE TO A COMPUTER!! He also neglected to tell you that there is a $40 fee to activate the external drive and that you have to deal with 100 idiots in India to determine that it is a big waste of time!!! Just make sure your DVR is unlimited.

i used to work for tech support for dish network and hybrid drives do not work. you will ne just a plain jane external hard drive to get it to work and if i remember correctly you can hook up a 700 gig hard drive with no problems they did a demo for us on the floor and it worked fine they used a wester digital external hard drive

yeah, no kidding, windows xp and it’s registry bs was a step towards what you’re saying. Save your old computers, save all your old software. It’ll be worth alot someday I guarantee it. People collect stupid crap like baseball cards, computer software will be wayyy more collectible someday.

DishNetwork recommends the use of the VIP722 DVR rcvr with External Hard Drives up to 300 gb…for the moment.

Note: I purchased a 750 gig acomdata hybrid external hard drive and it is not comatible. Nobody at dish seems to know this, but hybrids do not work with this feature. Bewarned! I not have to pay restocking fees to return mine. grrrrrr

also – this feature is only compatible with drives up to 750 gb in size.

my guess is that once you store the shows on the harddrive, you will only be able to watch them again if you continue to have a subscription to Dish Network…by the way, my guess is that they will eventually stop making computers and start giving us shit like this to prevent us from getting an edge on the companies…in other words, they fear piracy…

I hate all this protection people are doing lately it’s stupid.

If i record the news i can’t take it to my buddies house to watch it???

I know that alot of people feel like i do so this will most likely be hacked very soon.

Good idea followed by a very very bad one why is that always the case
